American Evangelicalism Has Crossed The Pond

Non-Profit UK Tour Reveals Insidious Encroachment of US Problem

On a recent tour of the United Kingdom, Founder and Board President of Recovering from Religion, Dr. Darrel Ray observed a phenomenon that has not received the concern and attention it warrants.

While Americans have become accustomed to American Evangelicalism being ever-present and intrusive into our free and pluralistic society, many Europeans are unaware of the creeping influence of this dominionism theology into daily life in Europe.

The collapse of dominant religions, like Catholicism and the Anglican Church, means many people are no longer affiliated with any church. Often when a person leaves their faith, they struggle for a period of time before finding and reestablishing community, morality, and contentment. During this time, people are often susceptible to proselytizing and conversion to new religions. American style Evangelical Christianity knows this and is making a massive effort to convert these people in Europe, just as they have been doing for years in the US.

Never missing an opportunity to prey upon the vulnerable, evangelical style organizations have held rallies and marches, leased billboards, proselytized on the streets, and placed street preachers in towns all across the UK and Ireland.

Statistically, involvement in religion is in decline, which often gives the impression that the war against superstition and harmful practice has been won. This is incorrect and dangerous thinking. Evangelical efforts are not a benign and quaint practice. They are a concerted effort to influence and control minds and ultimately, political systems. There are real psychological and social consequences when religions gain this kind of influence. Here is the full paper by Dr. Darrel Ray.

Recovering from Religion was founded in 2009 to help people navigate their life after religion and avoid being trapped by new religious ideologies.

Volunteers on the Recovering from Religion Helpline take calls and chats from around the world, from clients with every conceivable religious background, seeking hope, healing, and support after leaving the control of their religion. We offer virtual and in-person Support Groups that are held in almost every time zone.

Along with other humanist organizations, Recovering from Religion is actively seeking ways to promote critical thinking, encourage relationship building, and provide valuable education regarding keeping government secular, and communities strong and vibrant without the need for religious institutions, not only in the US, but worldwide.

Recovering from Religion is a 501(c)(3) based in Kansas, founded in 2009, and holds a Platinum rating from Guidestar, the highest rating possible, for its transparency and accountability.
